Continuing Education

Continuing Education

Bring Third Yoga to your studio for Continuing Education for your teachers. YACEP approved programming “Teaching to the Older Body”  will provide your teachers with the tools they need to either teach dedicated older body classes or manage older bodies in a general class.

Third Age Yoga How To’s

How to Pay

Third Age Yoga is a small business, and I want to keep things simple and fee free for as long as I can!  Most students use Zelle to pay me, but there are other options. Just message me and we can work it out.

For sessions at my home studio students pay the day of their session or if attending regularly they pre pay packages of sessions.

For 8 week series at other studios I require pre paying for the whole package because I pre pay my rental. If you miss any sessions I do not refund however I have a SEND A FRIEND program - you may “sell” or give your session to a friend or loved one..

If I am unable to teach due to illness I will offer a make up session at the end of the series.

How Third Age Yoga Sees Community

Third Age Yoga strives to create a brave space, a safe space for ALL. All genders, all races, all abilities and lived experiences.
Although Third Age Yoga is for older students, any age student is welcome in class. Sometimes slowing down and honoring limits is exactly what young bodies need too.

How to Fill out Assessment forms

When you are a new student you will be asked to fill out an assessment form. Knowing about health conditions and injuries as well as your goals and wellness objectives is an important part of therapeutic yoga.  Forms can be emailed to you or filled out in the studio .

Answering Your Questions

What does Therapeutic Yoga mean?

Therapeutic Yoga is yoga adapted to your body at this time of your life. Together we  use  written and  physical assessments to align your goals and objectives with your practice, likely meaning no headstands, deep back ends, loaded flexion or any posture with the potential to harm. That still leaves hundreds of yoga postures to explore as well as mudra (hand gestures), pranayama (breathing practices) meditation , and exploration of the subtle energies. Therapeutic yoga is taught by a teacher certified by a Yoga Alliance approved school.

Is Chair Yoga for me?

Chair Yoga can be for anyone. The chair is just another prop- and at Third Age we use a lot of props- chairs, belts, bolsters, walls, blocks, blankets, balls, barres and more. Props support us, stretch us, hold us, open us, and protect us. Props are friends to lean on- literally!

Although chair yoga can be very challenging, at Third Age we use the chair as a support to our practice- particularly for bodies over 70 years old. The chair enables us to reduce the up and down off of the floor, or kneeling on knees that don’t like hard surfaces, or stabilizing us in balance postures.

I say come give this amazing tool a try, and discover  how the chair can expand your practice for you.

Where is Third Age Yoga?

Why is Yoga so good for older bodies?

For privates, duets, trios and quartets Third Age Yoga operates out of a home studio in North Seattle (Pinehurst/Olympic Hills  area). For classes I may be in several locations around Seattle. Check out the “What’s new?” section under the “How To Practice“ section to see where I currently am.

‘If you are scheduling privates with me in my home studio I will share my address with you.

Can I practice Yoga during an illness or injury?

Why is Yoga so good for older bodies?

My Top Ten

1. Breathing- pranayama can help mitigate age-related lung capacity decline.

2. Balance-standing postures can reduce anxiety over falling and build stability.

3. Joints-mindful movement improves synovial fluid circulation, potentially alleviating pain from arthritis.

4. Strength -standing poses will improve muscle and bone strength.

5. Flexibility-stretching in yoga will improve flexibility which in turn will improve your range of motion.

6.Equanimity -a regular practice will enhance resilience, acceptance and mindfulness.

7. Community-joining others for practice is good for the soul.

8. Accessibility-yoga can be practiced by anyone anywhere. Yoga is much more than twisty poses you see in our culture’s media.

9. Memory-yoga reduces cortisol levels, improves blood flow and concentration.

10.Posture- through awareness, core strengthening, and breathing practices posture will improve.

Does Third Age Yoga teach young people?

Can I practice Yoga during an illness or injury?

Can I practice Yoga during an illness or injury?

Yes! But, I do not teach power yoga, or high intensity classes. I teach therapeutic yoga, which means slowing down, honoring our bodies limits with gentle asana, lots of breath work, guided imagery, and relaxation.

Can I practice Yoga during an illness or injury?

Can I practice Yoga during an illness or injury?

Can I practice Yoga during an illness or injury?

Yes, as long as we have clear communication between you, your Dr. and me. We will set up a plan for how to practice safely. I have worked with students during cancer treatment, and those living with Parkinson’s, M.S. fibromyalgia, vertigo, migraine, back pain, anxiety and depression and other challenges. Therapeutic yoga can be wonderfully healing.

Ellen’s Review

I‘ve been taking Christine’s yoga classes for several years now, and have not met any teacher who comes close to Christine’s knowledge, care, dedication, and lifelong commitment to yoga. As a 70’s something man, yoga classes can sometimes be  too competitive, with too much emphasis on the perfect yogic position, which my body may not be able to do. Instead, Christine encourages us to really be with our own bodies, working in ways that are beneficial for that moment. She always remains aware of each student, of each student’s specific history and issues, and always encourages us to respect our limitations .

Christine’s classes are not easy. Whether it’s strength, balance, breathing or general awareness, there is always a challenge in every session. And I’m always so happy I made it to class that day.

Christine is a superb teacher. Each lesson is individually planned based on her assessment of what your body needs. She has an extraordinary knowledge of how bodies move, particularly the older body, and will adapt to ensure you are safe from injury. Christine has more equipment than studios twice her size and she uses everything , so classes are always interesting. Spending time with Christine is a highlight of my week.
